Ohio Republicans Expand Control of State Supreme Court
The New York Times
Ohio Republicans expanded their slim majority on the state’s Supreme Court in Tuesday’s elections, turning back efforts to flip partisan control of the chamber, according to the Associated Press. Voters gave Republican candidates two court seats that had been held by Democrats and swept a third open seat, turning a 4-3 Republican edge on the court into a 6-1 majority, after progressives cast Republican candidates as extremists on abortion, and conservatives slammed Democratic candidates as soft on crime.
State committee floats 25 percent legislative pay raise
Boise State Public Radio
State lawmakers are in line for a substantial pay raise for the next two years, though not as generous as initially proposed. A citizens’ committee Wednesday morning recommended increasing annual legislative salaries to $25,000. That’s a 25 percent increase. Legislative leaders floated a much more generous plan last month that failed on a tie vote. It would’ve nearly doubled lawmakers’ salaries and tied them to a percentage of Idahoans’ average household income.
